Sliding barn doors - or in this case, sliding blackboard doors - seem to be a modern take on traditional pocket doors, which can offer a practical solution in rooms or hallways that lack space for a hinged door. Unlike pocket doors, these sliding portals don't need to fit inside the wall, which in some cases may make them less expensive or difficult to install or repair. The blackboard sliding door is a creative option for a guest bathroom. Sliding doors can conceal a home office or provide entry to laundry rooms. Sliding barn doors or antique sliding cellar doors (as pictured at the bottom of this post) also provide patina or a sense of history or interest to a space. Take a look . . .
"Barn doors painted [Benjamin Moore's Fresno] pack a punch in the laundry area. 'The doors to the laundry room could have been a lost opportunity - just another pair of white doors,' says [Mona Ross] Berman. 'But we felt they shouldn't be an afterthought. Painting them orange made them very visible and special. They read as art.' "

"A sliding barn-style door to the laundry took up less space than a hinged door. It's made of reclaimed chestnut, with old barn hardware."
