Making Up

A pretty vanity is the perfect place to start the day or prepare for a night on the town. Lucite and mirrored surfaces add glamour, while wood suits either traditional or eclectic spaces. Antique perfume bottles or hairbrushes on a sterling tray add a touch of silver. If you prefer gold, choose a gilt chair or stool. Place fresh flowers or favorite photos on your dressing table. Tuck a treasured note into the edge of your mirror. No matter which style you prefer, a vanity adds practical beauty to a bedroom, bath or dressing room.

"Antiques often need some kind of twist so you don't end up with a claustrophobic vintage vibe. Here, two antique lamps flanking a Deco-style mirror get an update with a Lucite vanity/desk. The see-through piece heightens the Grace Kelly glamour while banishing any lingering fustiness."

"I painted the room lilac, another one of those non-colors. The curtains are all oyster-colored Belgian linen. And we dressed up her vanity by lacquering the mirror and skirting the table with a royal blue and white taffeta stripe that goes truly beautifully with that lilac. This is not your classic blue and white room. It's sweet and understated."
